About CLOUDWATCHER
Greetings! Y'a' 'at 'eeh. I am a proud member of the Navajo Nation, known in our language as Dine' Bizaad, and I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Arizona, U.S.
Why did I choose to write about the enigmatic Hohokam (A.D. 1450- B.C.)? I was drawn to the challenge of exploring a culture and time period that remains largely shrouded in mystery. Little did I know, diving into the world of the Hohokam, or Huhugum as they called themselves, would be a journey of discovery and creativity, as I ventured into unknown territory with no roadmap to guide me.
I deliberately chose a subject that is not widely known, adding to the challenge and intrigue of the project. Some may find the abundance of main characters overwhelming, but I believe it enriches the narrative, providing diverse perspectives and experiences.
One of the most daunting tasks was breaking down the main story into over 60 interconnected short stories, which required meticulous planning and seamless linking to create a cohesive and engaging narrative.
While researching and writing, I made a conscious effort to avoid using modern terminology, acknowledging the advanced knowledge and skills of the Hohokam in various areas that often go unrecognized.
Transforming a story about indigenous people, a loyal dog, spirited kids, and daring teens on a desert quest into the exhilarating coming-of-age adventure it is today was no small feat. It required boundless imagination, relentless trial and error, and countless revisions to bring the story to life.
So, when did this creative journey begin? It all started with the first time I laid eyes on those intriguing marks on a blank white page - the written word that I now cherish and love to read, write, and share with others.
